SAVE THE CONGO: « Free Eugène Diomi Ndongala »

Free Eugène Diomi Ndongala

Last Updated on 28 August 2012

(London) Save theCongo deplores the epidemic of political abductions and disappearances inCongo; and calls uponUK and UN authorities to urgently help secure the release of Eugène Diomi Ndongala, leader of Christian Democrats inCongo.

Diomi is one of the leading opposition figures in Congo. He was elected in 2011 in the Congolese lower house, Assemble National, but he refused to take his seat in protest of wide spread vote rigging in favour of Joseph Kabila, documented by the EU, the Roman Catholic Church of Congo and Carter Centre. Diomi was abducted by “state security agents” on the 27th of June 2012. His whereabouts remain unknown. His health or well being could be in danger; and his family and friends are frightened about their own safety and well being. The Kabila regime has recently embarked on a campaign of malicious rumours to stain Diomi character.

Save the Congo’ founder and CEO, Vava Tampa, said:

“Diomi is just one of the many people kidnapped by the dictatorial regime of Joseph Kabila since the bitterly contested elections last November. This is a political ploy to suffocate the opposition; and intimidate the population into submission. Anyone who dares to question or criticise the Kabila & Co. is a target. Scores of rights activists, journalists and opposition leaders and activists have been abducted, tortured and in many cases murdered in recent years. “

Tampa added:

“We are calling upon UK authorities, and all good-willed governments in Africa and across the world, to urgently help secure the release of Eugène Diomi Ndongala.
