The United Nations (UN) mission tasked with monitoring Burundi’s presidential election has dismissed the poll’s results, which controversially turned out in President Pierre Nkurunziza’s favor.

The environment in Burundi was “not conductive for an inclusive, free and credible” presidential election, the UN observers said in a preliminary report on Monday.

The results from the July 21 polls were made public two days after the election by Burundi’s electoral commission, giving Nkurunziza 69.41 percent of the votes.

The UN observer mission said that there was “profound mistrust” between the opposing sides in Burundi, adding that Nkurunziza’s April 25 announcement of a bid for a third term in office caused “a deep political and socio-economic crisis” in the African state.

“Freedom of expression, assembly and association, essential conditions for the effective exercise of the right to vote, remained severely impaired,” the report said.

The mission also criticized what it called the unbalanced media coverage of the presidential poll in Burundi.

Meanwhile, the 15 UN Security Council member states plan to hold consultations on the situation in Burundi on Tuesday.

Burundi’s main opposition leader, Agathon Rwasa, has called for a new election following Nkurunziza’s victory last week.

Demonstrations against Nkurunziza led to about 80 deaths in the run-up to the polls, with opponents asserting that another tenure for the head of state would violate a constitutional two-term limit.
